Two of the most time-honoured universities in Northern Europe and five modern universities of applied sciences offer students, scholars and scientists excellent opportunities amid an alluring maritime flair. Students here get to study in the best possible conditions while enjoying an excellent quality of life. Researchers benefit from professional networks and modern facilities. Since the foundations for a good education are laid during school years, the federal state takes particular care to ensure young people get off to a great start. There are courses available at the state's adult education centres, known as "Volkshochschulen", for all those who wish to continue educating themselves as adults.

Between the beach and the lecture theatre

The two time-honoured universities in Rostock and Greifswald as well as five modern universities of applied sciences in Neubrandenburg, Güstrow, Stralsund, Wismar and Rostock offer teaching and research at the highest level. The degree courses are often the only ones of their kind in the fields of high-tech, the environment, biology and medicine, but also music. Those who want to study courses such as Aquaculture, Demography, Piano Duets, Culture - Interculturality - Literature or Digital Logistics and Management are drawn to the Baltic Sea.

MV also has a lot to offer students aside from the wonderful conditions for studying. A familiar atmosphere and knowing that everything is within reach greatly facilitate the start in student life. For those seeking regeneration and rest from the stress of studies, pristine nature is right on the doorstep: lakes and rivers, beaches and the sea are never far away and offer many opportunities for sports and recreation.

Prospective students are invited to explore the website "Sea your Future", where they will find important information and helpful links about studying at MV's universities and life in their respective locations.

A haven for science and research

A brisk wind and free space for ideas are what researchers and scientists look for. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern takes pride in being able to offer both at two universities and five universities of applied sciences that together have developed an innovative network of scientific and research institutes. In addition, there are many excellent non-university research establishments dedicated to finding answers to the questions of the future. Their spectrum of research topics ranges from satellite-aided earth observation to atomic fusion, and from the science behind ageing processes in humans to livestock research.

An excellent reputation and state of the art equipment entice many postgraduates to work at Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's research facilities. Renowned professors and numerous research groups along the Baltic coast study and teach maritime topics ranging from ocean biology to ship design. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a haven for science and research because it combines a solid bedrock with a steady stream of fresh ideas. The combination of tradition and progressiveness creates a fertile ground for ideas.

Good education pays off

Children and adolescents represent the future of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. A good education is the most important thing we can give them. Young people are supported according to their ability by a wide range of school types. The state has more than 500 general and vocational public schools. This is supplemented by numerous private schools.

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has a two-level school system: it begins in primary school which covers Years one through four. This is followed by the two-year orientation stage, independent of school-type, in which pupils are prepared for their move to Year 7 of secondary school. At the end of the orientation stage, a decision is made on future school careers: grammar school leads to a qualification for university entrance, the Abitur. At regional schools, pupils can acquire a qualification to enter a trade or their secondary school level I certificate. Comprehensive schools generally offer all three possible qualifications.

Education for all

The adult education centres in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern offer a broad programme which ranges from school-leaving qualifications through language and creative courses to health training and courses for continuing professional education. The courses, events, lectures and other formats are offered statewide, close to the place of residence and at low cost. They appeal to people of all ages and aspire to be socially integrative.

As approved course providers of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, all adult education centres in the state make a significant contribution to the linguistic and cultural integration of foreigners and late repatriates in MV. As a privileged partner of the naturalisation authorities of the state, they assess the German language skills of naturalisation candidates in numerous exams and conduct naturalisation tests.
