In addition, there are many excellent non-university research establishments dedicated to finding answers to the questions of the future. Their spectrum of research topics ranges from satellite-aided earth observation to atomic fusion, and from the science behind ageing processes in humans to livestock research.

Good education pays off

Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has a two-level school system: it begins in primary school which covers Years one through four. This is followed by the two-year orientation stage, independent of school-type, in which pupils are prepared for their move to Year 7 of secondary school. At the end of the orientation stage, a decision is made on future school careers: grammar school leads to a qualification for university entrance, the Abitur. At regional schools, pupils can acquire a qualification to enter a trade or their secondary school level I certificate. Comprehensive schools generally offer all three possible qualifications.

The adult education centres in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern offer a broad programme which ranges from school-leaving qualifications through language and creative courses to health training and courses for continuing professional education. The courses, events, lectures and other formats are offered statewide, close to the place of residence and at low cost. They appeal to people of all ages and aspire to be socially integrative.

As approved course providers of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees, all adult education centres in the state make a significant contribution to the linguistic and cultural integration of foreigners and late repatriates in MV. As a privileged partner of the naturalisation authorities of the state, they assess the German language skills of naturalisation candidates in numerous exams and conduct naturalisation tests.
